Officers' Revelry at the Tavern (Includes Free Wine)

50

Generous drinking was always an integral part of Tsarist Russia's celebrations. The practice of getting guests drunk to the point of stupefaction was even formally introduced by Tsar Peter I. Peter, who was a giant of a man for his time, did not show much restraint even when drinking. It's hard to judge the tastes of the first Russian emperor — he had no particular favorite among the beverages. On his travels through Europe he happily drank wines from Burgundy, the Mosel and the Rhine, while in England and Holland he drank beer. While sailing he liked to quaff rum and Madeira with the sailors, and on military campaigns he made do with the soldiers' and officers' vodka or beer rations. After becoming Russia's sole ruler, Peter often raised a toast with wine, but as the feast went on he frequently ordered vodka to be poured into it as well. Having the same done with the guests' goblets became one of the tsar's favorite table jokes.
