Guided tour on the Lõunalaager hiking trail

Guided tour on the Lõunalaager hiking trail
Värska Visitor Centre - Kindral Reegi Maja is located approximately 17 km from Lõunalaager and Seitsmemägi. Petseri Lõunalaager was one of the most important summer training camps of the Republic's Defence Forces from 1926 to 1940. In summer, up to three thousand soldiers, officers and service personnel gathered here. They practised military skills, held parades, listened to the orchestra and lived as if in a small town. Today, most of the buildings have disappeared, but the landscape and surviving structures still tell the story of this place. The symbol of the camp was Seitsmemägi, which has now been restored. On the walk through Lõunalaager, we visit Seitsmemägi, follow the former camp roads and stop at the most important sites, using old photographs and stories of life in the former camp. https://www.setomuuseum.ee/et/jalutuskaik-lounalaagris For those interested in military history, we recommend starting with a guided tour of Värska Visitor Centre - Kindral Reegi Maja, then continuing along the trails of Põhjalaager, stopping for refreshments at Seto Tsäimaja and continuing on to Lõunalaager

Guided tour on the North Camp hiking trail

Guided tour on the North Camp hiking trail
In 1926, at the initiative of General Nikolai Reek, the Petseri North Camp of the Estonian Defence Forces was established in Värska on the shore of Lake Õrsava. It was the Defence Forces’ summer training centre, where cavalry and artillery troops from all over Estonia trained. The soldiers themselves built the barracks, headquarters building, homes for officers’ families, the camp commander and the commandant, a bakery, stables for the horses, a shop, a 500-seat casino and canteen, as well as other auxiliary buildings. The arrival of soldiers each spring significantly enlivened life in the area. Most of the buildings have since been destroyed, but the barracks that once housed the soldiers and some residential buildings have survived. In 2020, the summer residence of General Nikolai Reek, which had belonged to the camp complex, was restored and opened to the public; it is a fine example of the beloved Art Nouveau style of the 1920s. During the walk in the North Camp, we bring the life of the former camp back to life with the help of old photographs and stories. https://www.setomuuseum.ee/et/jalutuskaik-pohjalaagris For those interested in military history, we recommend beginning with a guided tour of the Värska Visitor Centre – General Reek House, then continuing along the trails of the North Camp, stopping for a meal at Seto Tsäimaja, and proceeding to the South Camp
