Villaladu

Villaladu – an event venue with the soul of history and the sea Standing in Kärdla harbour, Villaladu is a place where Hiiumaa’s history meets contemporary events. This venerable building of limestone and lime plaster was completed in 1849 as part of the ensemble of storehouses at Kärdla harbour. Large bales of wool were once kept here, having arrived by sea from Australia and New Zealand, awaiting their journey to the Hiiu-Kärdla kalevivabrik. The factory operated from 1830 to 1941 and its influence reached far beyond textile production: it was around the factory that the former Swedish village grew into today’s Kärdla. The thick stone walls of Villaladu, its spacious interior and the details worn by time carry stories of seafaring, harbour industry and enterprising people. Here you feel something that cannot be designed into a new building — authenticity. It is not just an empty hall, but a space with character, memory and soul. The proximity of the sea adds a special atmosphere to every event: harbour wind, the cry of gulls, the light of long summer evenings and the sense of openness on the horizon create a mood even before a guest steps over the threshold. Villaladu’s greatest strength is its adaptability. The open space gives organisers the freedom to create exactly the world an event needs — a formal dinner, an atmospheric concert, a creative conference, a wedding, a performance or an island-wide gathering. The historical setting does not impose a ready-made design but gives depth and a personal frame to every idea. Here refined formality can meet island simplicity, and contemporary staging can meet the quiet dignity of old limestone. Villaladu suits people who are looking for more than four walls and a roof. It is a place for those who want an event to be remembered for its surroundings, its feeling and its story. Kärdla town centre is nearby, but the harbour already has a different rhythm — calmer, more spacious and more maritime. Guests do not simply arrive at a venue, they arrive in Hiiumaa: an island where time moves at its own pace and every old building seems to have something to tell. Kärdla Villaladu is an ideal event venue because you do not have to stage history here. It already exists in the walls, the light and the sea-facing surroundings. All that is needed is to open the doors, bring people together and let the event become part of Villaladu’s next story.
