C. R. Jakobson Farm Museum

At the C. R. Jakobson Farm Museum in Kurgja you can explore the life and work of Carl Robert Jakobson, a leading figure of Estonia’s 19th-century national awakening, and the farm life he established. In September 2021 a new exhibition opened that presents Jakobson’s life and work through his relatives, friends and fellow activists. The exhibition offers discovery and enjoyment for all visitors. The museum’s outdoor area and the exhibition are supported by the NUMU app, which you can also read or listen to at home. Kurgja was laid out according to Jakobson’s own drawings and dreams. At the farm museum, which still practices cattle breeding and farming, you can see cows, sheep and horses, as well as restored old farm buildings such as the cowshed, granary, mill and threshing barn. You can also try farm work yourself and learn about old customs — regular events include Farm Work Day, Estonian Horse Day, Sheep Day, traditional Midsummer’s Eve celebrations and others. With prior booking you can enjoy traditional national dishes at the museum! Interesting fact: Carl Robert Jakobson’s portrait appeared on the 500-kroon banknote.
